Dean's Workshops

The School of Medicine will present a new series of workshops on interdisciplinary topics of interest to scientists and physicians at Yale.

Titled "Dean's Workshops," the series is designed to bring together basic scientists, clinical researchers and clinicians from across the School of Medicine. Colleagues from the main campus may also participate. The workshops will address a wide spectrum of approaches to biomedical research, with special emphasis on state-of-the-art methodologies and their applications. A specific aim of the workshops is to provide information to faculty members who may wish to pursue funding opportunities through the new NIH Roadmap Initiative.

The initial workshop will be "Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): First in a Series on Structural/Functional Bioimaging." It will be held 1-3 p.m. on Friday, May 7, in the Anlyan Center auditorium, 300 Cedar St. Dr. Dennis D. Spencer, interim dean of the School of Medicine and the Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery, will deliver opening remarks. Later talks in the series will address the application of MRI to neuropsychiatry, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Archived video of each workshop, presentation slides and other materials will be available online at http://info.med.yale.edu/workshops/.

Peabody events

A "Source to Sound Cleanup" and a plant sale will be two of the events sponsored by the Peabody Museum of Natural History in May.

On Saturday, May 8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., volunteers and museum staff will help in an effort to clean up local waterways. Activities about the river and Long Island Sound will be offered as well as opportunities to learn about aquatic biodiversity and local water resource issues. Participants will receive a T-shirt from the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association, as well as gloves and supplies. Volunteers should meet at Quinnipiac Park on Front Street, also known as Front Street Park, just south of the Grand Avenue Bridge.

On Friday, May 7, at 4 p.m., a related event will take place: a celebration marking the opening of a permanent exhibit at the park. Titled "The Muskrat and the Osprey: The Hidden Quinnipiac Marsh," the exhibit gives historical and current perspectives on the formation, wildlife and human uses and abuses of the Quinnipiac Marsh.

Also in May, the museum will hold its third annual "Butterfly and Bird Plant Sale." The event will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. Perennials, annuals and shrubs suited especially for attracting birds, butterflies and other wildlife will be offered for sale. All proceeds from the sale support educational programs for area students.
