Dr. John Krystal

Dr. John Krystal is appointed
as the McNeil Jr. Professor

Dr. John H. Krystal, recently appointed as the Robert L. McNeil Jr. Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, is spearheading a major effort to help turn research findings about alcoholism into treatment for patients.

Krystal is founding director of the Center for Translational Neuroscience of Alcoholism, which was established in 2002 through a $9 million, five-year grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. By exploring the biochemical and functional characteristics of a brain circuit that is apparently linked to a vulnerability to alcoholism, the center seeks to guide clinical research studies on those with alcohol dependence.

In his other research, Krystal has studied the psychopharmacology and neurobiology of schizophrenia, traumatic stress disorders and various other forms of substance abuse. He developed new techniques for probing neurobiologic abnormalities in schizophrenia and established clinical research programs using magnetic resonance to study the brains of healthy individuals versus those with psychiatric illnesses.

A 1980 graduate of the University of Chicago, Krystal earned his M.D. in 1984 from the Yale School of Medicine and joined the Yale faculty in 1988, following an internship at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven and a postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatry at Yale. He is deputy chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry and former director of its Division of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience. He was named to the Albert E. Kent Professorship in Psychiatry in 2000.

Krystal is also affiliated with the Yale-Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven, where he is director of the Alcoholism Research Center and of the Clinical Neuroscience Division in the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He is also deputy director for clinical research in the Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities, Connecticut Mental Health Center. His previous posts include founding chief of the Neuropsychiatric Studies Unit of the Schizophrenia Biological Research Center and deputy director for research and academic affairs at the Yale-VA Center.

The author of numerous articles and book chapters, Krystal has been honored for his work by the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the Lilly Research Foundation. His most recent honors include the Joel Elkes International Award of the American Council of Neuropsychopharmacology and the Han Jönas Weitbrecht Scientific Award from Bayer Vital GmbH in Germany. He has also several times been designated as one of the "best doctors" in the state and the nation.
