Strolling super-sized street performers, street-corner salons where everyday coifs are transformed into vibrant "hairsculptures" and a gigantic light sculpture on the New Haven Green featuring thousands of red, green and blue LEDs that flash and ripple to the whim of a computer -- these will be just some of the more obvious signs later this month that "Arts & Ideas New Haven" has returned to the city.
Like its predecessors, the ninth annual International Festival of Arts and Ideas will bring together performers from both faraway nations and nearby neighborhoods to present programs designed to entertain, educate and inspire the creativity of local audiences.
"The festival transforms the mundane, excites the minds and thrills the senses -- in other words, it's a fantastic mix of brilliance, bravura and fun," says Mary Miller, festival director.
"Arts & Ideas New Haven" will take place June 11-26 at locations throughout the city and its environs. Yale is once again both a sponsor of the festival and a venue for many of its programs.
The festival will include a blend of free and for-fee events. Some of the highlights this year include:
* A performance by the world-renowned Zulu group Ladysmith Black Mambazo at 8 p.m. on June 20 on the New Haven Green. Admission: Free. This is just one of dozens of free concerts that will be presented on the Green during the course of the festival on the World Stage and Family Stage.
* An All-City Carnival and All-City Parade all day on June 12. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with a parade of marching bands, dancers and other surprises down Grand Avenue to the New Haven Green, followed by an all-day carnival featuring jazz, funk and Afro-Caribbean music. Admission: Free.
* A concert by award-winning vocalist Bobby McFerrin and renowned tap-dancer Savion Glover at 8 p.m. on June 13 at the Shubert Theater, 247 College St. Tickets: $48, $36, $20 and $10.
* "The Moth," a "floating nightclub" devoted to the spoken word. Satirist Andy Borowitz will host the urban storytelling event featuring noted comedians and novelists, as well as local personalities, beginning at 8 p.m. on June 26 in the Quinnipiak Club, 221 Church St. Tickets: $35.
* "American Seasons," a concert featuring music by world-renowned violinist Mark O'Connor and poetry narration by CBS news correspondent Morley Safer, at 8 p.m. on June 11 at the Shubert Theater. Tickets: $48, $36, $20 and $10.
* Family activities, including "Planet Play," a free program of games and events for children on the New Haven Green 1-5 p.m., June 19-20; and "The Harry Potter Concert and Quiz," featuring a performance of music from "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, at 8 p.m. on June 16 at Edgerton Park on Whitney Ave. Tickets: $20; $10 children under 12; free for ages 5 and under.
* Street performances by Osadia, a Spanish troupe of hairdressers/performers, June 11-13 (times vary), and Shinbone Alley Stilts, high-rise comedians from the United States, June 19-20, 1-5 p.m.
* "Chasing Rainbows," a large-scale light sculpture by visual artist Leo Villareal, which is powered by software he designed, opening at 10 p.m. on June 11 on the New Haven Green.
* "Dancing in the Streets," a dance party with bands and a D.J. on Church St. between Chapel and Elm streets, beginning at 8 p.m. on June 26.
