Child development expert to discuss school readiness

Samuel Meisels, president of Erikson Institute, a graduate school in child development, will visit the campus on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 25 and 26.

On May 25, Meisels will give a Grand Rounds Lecture on the topic of "Assessment, Accountability and School Readiness Testing" from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Donald Cohen Conference Rm. at the Child Study Center, 230 South Frontage Rd. On May 26, Meisels will deliver the 12th annual Warren Weiswasser Pediatric Grand Rounds Lecture, titled "Assessing Young Children's School Readiness: What Pediatricians Should Know," noon-1 p.m. in the Fitkin Amphitheatre, 15 York St. Both talks are free and open to the public.

Meisels, who joined the staff at Erikson Institute in 2002, is considered to be one of the nation's leading authorities on the assessment of young children. He has published over 150 articles, books and monographs, and is co-author of the "Work Sampling System," "The Early Screening Inventory Revised" and "The Handbook of Early Childhood Intervention."

Meisels' research focuses on the development of alternative assessment strategies for young children; the impact of standardized tests on children; and developmental screening in early childhood. He recently completed work on the development of The Ounce Scale, an observational assessment for birth to three-year-olds and their families.

The Warren Weiswasser Lecture series was established by friends and family of Warren Weiswasser, a former fellow at the Yale Child Study Center and deputy director of the Connecticut Health Care Provider. The lectureship highlights social and behavioral issues related to children.

"Hug Your Customers" author to give Grand Rounds Lecture

Jack Mitchell, best-selling author of "Hug Your Customers, the Proven Way to Personalize Sales and Achieve Astounding Results," will give a Grand Rounds Lecture on Wednesday, May 26.

Mitchell, the chief executive officer of the clothing stores Mitchells of Westport and Richards of Greenwich, will discuss his renowned approach to customer service and how it can be applied to medical care delivery at 10 a.m. in the Fitkin Amphitheatre, 15 York St. Sponsored by the Department of Dermatology, the talk is free and open to members of the Yale community only.

Mitchell, who joined the family clothing store business Ed Mitchell Inc. in 1969, acquired Richards of Greenwich in 1995. In his book "Hug Your Customers," he outlines a series of principles that can be adopted by any company to increase current customer business and attract new customers.

Considered by industry leaders to be two of the most successful upper-end men's and women's specialty stores in America, Mitchells and Richards were the recipient of the award for Store of the Year for 2000 in the annual Retail Design Awards competition held by the National Association of Store Fixtures Manufacturers and co-sponsored by VM+SD magazine. In 2001, Mitchells and Richards were named Retailer of the Year by MR Magazine.
