Alumni return to campus to celebrate reunions

A musical jamboree, talks by Yale's top teachers and numerous opportunities to dine and reminisce with classmates will highlight two reunion weekends being sponsored by the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA).

The first weekend, May 27-30, will bring to campus members of the Classes of 1939, 1944, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984 and 1989. This will be followed June 3-6 with the return of graduates from the Classes of 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1994 and 1999.

While the various classes will sponsor their own special dinners, receptions and other activities, the two weekends will each feature an opportunity for alumni to hear President Richard C. Levin speak about current changes on campus and his vision for the future; to assume the role of students again at the AYA Faculty Lectures; to sample some of the diverse opportunities available at Yale through tours, workshops and seminars; and to raise their voices in song at "A Celebration of Yale Singing" in Woolsey Hall.

The AYA Faculty Lectures will feature the following topics and speakers (most of whom will speak at both reunion sessions):

* "Ambushed by a Memoir: Confessions of a Wayward Historian," Carlos Eire, the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of Religious Studies & History and author of "Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy."

* "Grand Strategy: Yale, the United States, and the World," John Lewis Gaddis, the Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military & Naval History, adviser in International Security Studies and author of "Surprise, Security, and the American Experience."

* "America and the Crisis of the Global Environment: Is It Real?" Gustave Speth '64, '69 LLB, dean of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

* "Ethnic Cleansing Chimpanzee Style," Robert J. Wyman, professor of molecular, cellular & developmental biology.

* "Why They Did It: Jihadist Ideology and the War on Terror," Mary Habeck '89 M.A., '96 Ph.D, associate professor of history.

"Saturday Morning at Yale," one of the most popular programs at recent reunions, will offer alumni an opportunity to tour such campus highlights as the Newberry Organ and the Peabody Museum and to take part in a variety of programs led by Yale faculty and administrators.

These will include "Actors at Work -- A Scene from Modern Drama and Shakespeare," "The Bayeux Tapestry and the Norman Conquest," "Descartes' Baby: How the Science of Child Development Explains What Makes Us Human," "Reclaiming Democracy: Athens in America," "Stagestruck in America: Artists, Entertainers, and Audiences, 1906-1956," "The International Center for Finance," "Ask Not What Technology Can Do for You ...," "Picturing the Past: Early 20th Century Lesbian & Gay American Art," "Irrational Exuberance in Today's Markets," "The John Henry Newman of History & the John Henry Newman of the Apologia," "Ancient Battles, New Prejudices and Future Perspectives: The EU and Turkey," "The Middle Ages: A Thousand Years Without a Bath," "Does It Swing? Listening to Rhythm in Jazz, Classical & Pop Music,""Stage Door: The Program and Facilities of America's Premier Theater Conservatory, the Yale School of Drama," "A Great University in a Post-Urban City," and "Peabody Museum Lecture with the Director."

There will also be programs on "Campus Planning & the Yale Capital Program," "IT at Yale," "Estate Planning 101 and Beyond," as well as a "Glee Club Singing Workshop" and presentations on "Admissions & Financial Aid," "Revisiting Old Yale," "Athletics at Yale" and "Yale and Service: Learning from the Elm City." Special tours of New Haven and such campus facilities as the Wright Nuclear Accelerator Laboratory and the Newberry Organ in Woolsey Hall, as well as family-oriented programs at Yale's museums will round out the weekends.
