Athletics department staff
go to bat for a worthy cause

Yale baseball coach John Stuper pitched to his co-workers for nearly three hours on May 4 at Yale Field as part of a fundraiser for Jonathan Narducci, an 18-month-old child who is paralyzed from the neck down due to a rare disease.

Members of the Athletics Department made donations for the opportunity to bat against Stuper, who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. The event raised $1,410 for the Narducci family.

"It was a great night for a great cause," says Stuper. "I came across this story and it just touched me."

Jonathan, the son of Paul and Bonnie Narducci, suffers from acute transverse myelitis, a neurological condition caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. Stuper, who learned of Jonathan's condition from a story in the newspaper, quickly rallied his co-workers to assist Jonathan and his family in the enormous cost of renovating their home to accommodate his disability.
