Dr. Roberta L. Hines

Dr. Roberta Hines:
Greene Professor of Anesthesiology

Dr. Roberta L. Hines, the new Nicholas M. Greene Professor of Anesthesiology, is advancing the practice of anesthesiology both through her own research and through the education of future clinicians and researchers in anesthesia care.

As chair of the School of Medicine's Department of Anesthesiology, Hines has helped create a curriculum that introduces medical students to the specialty at the end of their first year, much earlier than before. Under her leadership, the department has also created third- and fourth-year electives in anesthesiology, and she and colleagues at Yale and other medical schools are developing an interdisciplinary curriculum that exposes medical students to the important and complicated discipline of pain management.

Her own research and clinical practice have focused on critical care medicine, right ventricular function, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, circulatory effects of protamine, platelet function, new inotropic agents, and renal function and preservation in the perioperative period. Hines' work as a clinician earned her recognition as one of the "Best Doctors in America" 1997-1999 and "Best Doctors in Northeast United States" 1999-2000.

The author of over 150 publications, Hines co-edited the three-volume "Annals of Anesthesia Pharmacology" (with A. Bowdle) and two volumes of "Monitoring in Anesthesia and Critical Care" (in 1994 with C. Blitt and in 2000 with Blitt and C. Lake). She is senior editor of the forthcoming 10-volume "Requisites in Anesthesiology."

Hines earned her B.A. at the University of New Hampshire and her M.D. at Darmouth Medical School. Originally, she planned to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, but during her three-year surgery residency at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, she became interested in anesthesiology and subsequently did a four-year residency in that field, followed by a year as a cardiovascular fellow. She has been an attending physician at the hospital since 1984, and has served as director of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. She is currently chief of the Department of Anesthesiology.

She joined the faculty at the School of Medicine as an instructor in 1982 and rose to a full professorship in 1995, when she was also named chair of anesthesiology, having held that post in an acting capacity the previous year. She has served on numerous University, hospital and national committees.

Much in demand as a speaker, Hines has given over 200 presentations nationally and internationally, and has held over 50 visiting professorships. Her professional affiliations include election to the Academy of Anesthesiology and the Association of University Anesthesiologists.
