Henry B. Hansmann



Henry Hansmann is named as Lines Professor

Henry B. Hansmann, the newly designated Augustus E. Lines Professor
of Law, is a leading law and economics scholar who has focused his work on the structure and economic functions of organizational law, including the law of business corporations as well as non-profits, mutuals, trusts, cooperatives, condominiums and partnerships.

Hansmann's current works is particularly concerned with issues of cross-national comparative organizational law. He has written about a broad range of other topics, from markets for human organs to artists' moral rights to property rights. He is the author of the 1996 book "The Ownership of Enterprise" and is a co-author of "The Anatomy of Corporate Law: A Comparative and Functional Approach," published in 2004 by Oxford University Press.

Hansmann's numerous articles have been published in both legal and economic journals and publications.

A graduate of Brown University, Hansmann earned a J.D. from the Yale Law School in 1974, then went on to obtain a Ph.D. in economics from the University in 1978. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania 1975 to 1981, and then came to Yale as a visiting professor in 1982. He joined the permanent faculty the following year, and was appointed the Sam Harris Professor in 1988.

Hansmann left Yale in 2003 to become the George T. Lowy Professor at the New York University (NYU) School of Law, returning to the University this summer. His appointment as the Lines Professor is retroactive to July 1.

The Yale law professor has visiting professorships at Harvard University and at NYU. He was a visiting research associate at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale 1977-1978 and held a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship 1985-1986.

The Yale law professor is currently serving as president of the American Law and Economics Association.
