Sam Harris Professorship

Jonathan R. Macey, the newly named Sam Harris Professor of Corporate Law, Corporate Finance and Securities Law, joined the Yale faculty this year after teaching since 1987 at Cornell University.

Macey has written numerous articles for scholarly publications and the popular press on topics ranging from corporate governance of banks to corporate takeovers to insider trading.

His books include "Fraud on Inefficient Markets," "An Introduction to Modern Financial Theory," "Insider Trading: Economics, Politics, and Policy," "Third Party Legal Opinions," "Costly Policies: State Regulation and Antitrust Exemption in Insurance Markets" (with Geoffrey P. Miller), "Banking Law and Regulation: Cases and Materials" (with G. Miller and R. Carnell), "Using Federalism to Improve Environmental Policy" (with H. Butler) and "Corporations, Including Limited Liability Companies and Partnerships" (with R. Hamilton), which is now in its eighth edition. His book "Swedish Corporate Law in Transition: A Law and Economics Analysis," was published in both Swedish and English.

A graduate of Harvard University, Macey earned his J.D. in 1982 from the Yale Law School, where he was the article and book review editor for the Yale Law Journal. He was a law clerk to Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, before joining the faculty at Emory University, where he taught for several years before moving to Cornell. He also taught at the University of Chicago 1990-1991.

At Cornell, Macey was director of the John M. Olin Program in Law and Economics, and held the J. Dupratt White Professorship. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Virginia, the University of Tokyo, the Stockholm School of Economics and Bocconi University in Milan, Italy.

Macey's honors include an honorary degree from the Stockholm School of Economics and the Paul M. Bator Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Public Service from the University of Chicago Law School chapter of the Federalist Society.
