Symposium shows how researchers are using Underground Railroad to trace family histories
The Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition and the Center for International and Area Studies will join with the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in sponsoring a symposium on genealogy that focuses on the underground railroad.
The event is titled "Underground Railroad Travelers: Research and Family History; Symposium for Scholars, Genealogists and Family Historians; Finding People Versus Places." Using the underground railroad as both metaphor and tool, the symposium will present emerging research and instruction on locating African-American ancestors. It will take place 8:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Unitarian Meeting House, 50 Bloomfield Ave., in Hartford. Keynote speakers will include David Blight, Spencer Crew and Tony Burroughs.
