Music, dance and poetry highlight Peabody's third '¡Fiesta Latina!'
The Peabody Museum of Natural History will celebrate the music and traditions of Latin American and Spanish cultures on Saturday, April 9, with a day-long program titled "¡Fiesta Latina!"
The festival, now in its third year, will take place 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Highlights will include performances of traditional and contemporary Latin American music, dance and poetry, as well as storytelling, face painting and mask making for youngsters.
The featured performers are: GuakiSolsa, a seven-piece Salsa band (11:30 a.m.); Eduardo Rocha, Jaime Chiluisa and Dan Gardella (12:30 p.m.); Ginga Brasileira, a local capoeira troupe, led by Efraim Silva (1:30 p.m.); Integracion Cultural Latina, a traditional Bolivian dance troupe (2:30 p.m.); and Alafia Express, an Afro-Cuban folkloric song and dance group, led by Louie Gamboa (3:30 p.m.). All performances will be in the museum's Great Hall of Dinosaurs.
The film "Puerto Rican Passages," about experiences of Puerto Ricans in Connecticut, will be shown several times throughout the day. A detailed schedule can be found at www.peabody.yale.edu/events/fiesta.html.
"¡Fiesta Latina!" is supported by the sponsorships of the Regional Water Authority, Suzio York Hill and the Yale Office of New Haven and State Affairs.
The Peabody Museum of Natural History is located at 170 Whitney Ave. Admission is $7 for adults; $6 for seniors age 65 and older; $3 for children ages 3-18 and older students with I.D. Museum members, Yale community members with a valid I.D. and children under age 3 are admitted for free. The museum is wheelchair accessible. Parking is available in the Peabody Visitor Parking Lot, entrance off Whitney Ave. one block north of the museum; follow signs inside the entrance.
