Dr. Peter M. Glazer

Glazer appointed to Hunter chair

Dr. Peter M. Glazer, the new Robert E. Hunter Professor of Radiology, is nationally known in the field of radiation oncology for his research on DNA repair and mutagenesis in mammalian cells.

The chair of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology and chief of therapeutic radiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) since 2002, Glazer has also focused his research on gene targeting and gene therapy, genetic instability in cancer, radiation resistance and cellular responses to radiation and chemotherapy. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Genetics.

In one recent study, Glazer and a Yale colleague explored how the chemotherapy drug cisplatin kills cancer cells. They discovered a new pathway for cisplatin and now aim through subsequent research to enhance the effectiveness of the drug.

Glazer's clinical interests include general radiation therapy, and breast, prostate and lung cancer. He is director of the Yale Cancer Center's Therapeutic Radiology Program and former director of its Molecular Oncology Program. He holds several U.S. patents and is the co-author of nearly 100 scientific papers and numerous book chapters.

Glazer earned his B.A. at Harvard University and a M.Sc. in biochemistry from the University of Oxford in England before coming to Yale, where he earned M.D. and Ph.D. (genetics) degrees in 1987. He joined the Yale faculty in 1991 after a residency in therapeutic radiology at YNHH.

Glazer served as medical director of the Phelps Radiation Therapy Clinic at Uncas-on-Thames Hospital 1997-1998 and as medical director of the radiation therapy facility at the William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich 1998-2002.

Glazer's honors include a New Investigator Award from the American Society for Photobiology, a Michael Fry Research Award from the Radiation Research Society, and selection as a Leukemia Society of America Scholar and a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Stohlman Scholar.
