Old Campus echoed with the sound of musket fire on June 6, when the Sons of the American Revolution came to Yale for a ceremony honoring Nathan Hale as part of a state-wide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the patriot's birth.
The festivities -- which included a wreath-laying and remarks by Yale and local dignitaries, in addition to the musket salute -- took place near the statue of Hale, a Connecticut native and a 1773 graduate of Yale College.
Hale was recruited by General George Washington in 1776 to spy on the British. He was captured after only two weeks and hanged on Sept. 22. Legend has it that his final words were: "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country."
