President Richard C. Levin has appointed a committee to advise him in the search for the next dean of the School of Music. Robert Blocker, who has held that post since 1995, is leaving at the end of June to become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas.
Barbara Shailor, deputy provost for the arts, will chair the search committee. It also includes: Boris Berman, professor (adjunct) of piano at the School of Music; Martin Bresnick, professor (adjunct) at the School of Music; Daniel Harrison, professor (adjunct) of music theory in the Yale College Department of Music; Martin Jean, director and professor (adjunct) of organ at the Institute of Sacred Music and a School of Music faculty member; Joan Panetti, the Sylvia and Leonard Marx Jr. Class of 1954 Adjunct Professor of Music at the School of Music; Frank Turner, the John Hay Whitney Professor of History, director of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library and associate University librarian; and Doris Yarick-Cross, professor (adjunct) of music at the School of Music and artistic director of the Yale Opera program.
Levin encouraged anyone with nominations or comments about the search for a new dean of the School of Music to contact any of the committee members or himself directly.
