YUWO lectures

The second lecture in the fall "Lunch and Learn" series, sponsored by the Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO), will be held at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the master's house, Timothy Dwight College, 63 Wall St.

Robert Ferris Thompson, the Colonel John Trumbull Professor of Art, will present an audio/visual presentation of his new book, "Tango: The Art History of Love."

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; coffee and cookies will be provided. For more information, call (203) 488-7279.

YUWO will also sponsor the final lecture in its series, "Issues at the Forefront of Biology." It will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Rm. 119, Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.

The lecture will be delivered by John Carlson, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Carlson will speak on "How Do Fruit Flies Find Bananas and How Do Mosquitoes Find Us?"

Book Fair

The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center at Yale School of Medicine Inc. will host its annual book fair to raise funds for the center.

The event will take place Monday-Friday, Nov. 14-18, in the rotunda of the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The fair will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and will feature children's books, current bestsellers, cookbooks and self-help books. For more information, call (203) 785-3829.


Childcare Center tours

The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center at Yale School of Medicine Inc. will hold kindergarten tours for the 2006-2007 school year, beginning Monday, Nov. 7.

The kindergarten program is a nationally accredited, 12-month program that follows the School of Medicine calendar. Center hours are 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., with before- and after-school care included. The program has two certified teachers with a group size of 10 children. Scholarships are available.

Art Place exhibit

The Yale Medical Group Art Place will open its 11th exhibit with a reception at
5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Ave.

Exhibits will include paintings, quilts, silver jewelry and photographs. A poetry reading to celebrate the publication of "Caduceus Volume III" will begin at 7 p.m.

Exhibit hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Admission is free. The exhibit will run through May 2006.

Call for volunteers

Volunteers are requested to act as New Haven Science Fair mentors.

Volunteers donate one hour per week through March to mentor a New Haven kindergartener to 12th grader working on a project. The projects will be exhibited at the New Haven Science Fair in Yale Commons in March. Mentors receive a printed guide and ongoing guidance from an experienced mentor coordinator.

Last year more than 1,000 students from 49 New Haven schools took part in the fair. Seventy mentors from Yale and other local organizations participated. To volunteer, visit www.nhsciencefair.org or contact Lise Orville at lorville@aol.com.


Library tours

Sterling Memorial Library will offer two guided tours in November as part of its 75th anniversary season of events.

On Tuesday, Nov. 15, "Treasures of the Arts Library" will allow visitors the opportunity to view the Visual Arts Resources Collection, which comprises approximately 320,000 slides and 187,000 mounted photographs. The collection is located at Street Hall, opposite Starbucks on Chapel Street. Tours will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, "Treasures of the Slavic Collection" will be a tour through one of the West's core collections of Russian literature. The collection includes approximately 150,000 volumes relating to central and southeastern Europe and 600,000 volumes relating to the former Soviet republics. The collection is housed in the Slavic Reading Room in Sterling Memorial Library, 120 Wall St. Tours will be held at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
