Auction to help alleviate hunger, homelessness

Sailing and fishing excursions, multi-course dinners at local restaurants and in private homes, homemade goodies and personal services (ranging from dance and language lessons to laundry and grocery shopping) -- these are some of the items that will be available to the highest bidders at the annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction, being held Monday-Thursday, Nov. 14-17.

The event is organized by students in Yale's medical, public health and nursing programs to raise funds for organizations dedicated to alleviating hunger and homelessness in the Greater New Haven area.

Last year, the auction raised $30,000 and provided grants to nine community service agencies in New Haven. The organizations that will benefit this year are the Community Health Care Van, Youth Continuum, the Yale Student Free Clinic, Liberty Community Services, the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Christian Community Action and the Leadership Development Project (a division of Columbus House).

The items on auction are donated by faculty, students, staff and local businesses. They range from the humorous (a one-month supply of personalized greetings and packages in the mail and a faculty member's trademark bowtie) to the practical (a tutorial in anatomy and medical Spanish lessons) to outdoor offerings (sailing aboard a 36-foot sloop, dinner followed by star-gazing with powerful telescopes, and a bike tour of New Haven with lunch atop East Rock).

The event features two components: a Silent Auction, held daily Nov. 14-17 in front of the entrance to the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library in the Sterling Hall of Medicine (SHM), 333 Cedar St., and a live auction, taking place at 5:15 p.m. in Harkness Auditorium, SHM. The Silent Auction ends when the Live Auction begins, and bidders should be prepared to pay by cash, check or credit card at the time of purchase.

In conjunction with the auction, a number of other events designed to raise funds and awareness about hunger and homelessness are being offered. These include a Habitat for Humanity Build Day on Nov. 12; a candlelight vigil on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in front of Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St., during which 1,300 candles representing New Haven's homeless population will be lit; and a dinner panel discussion on hunger and homelessness on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. at a location to be announced. Speakers at the latter event include healthcare workers from the Fair Haven Clinic, homeless individuals, and students who are working to alleviate hunger and homelessness.
