Tragic tale of 'The Duchess of Malfi'
to unfold at Drama School

"The Duchess of Malfi," John Webster's tragedy about a woman who marries against her brothers' wishes and sets off a storm of revenge, will be the next production at the School of Drama.

The classic work will be presented Jan. 17-21 at the University Theatre, 222 York St. It is the thesis production of directing student Susanna Gellert.

Written circa 1631, "The Duchess of Malfi" is based on actual events that took place in Italy during the early 16th century. In the play, the recently widowed Duchess falls in love with her steward, Antonio. Her brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, forbid her to remarry, not wishing to share her inheritance. She and Antonio wed in secret, and when the brothers eventually learn of their union, torture, mayhem and murder ensue.

Gellert is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at the School of Drama, where she directed "Measure for Measure," "The Shoemaker's Prodigious Wife" and "Devil Caught Rope." At the Yale Cabaret, her credits include "Request Concert," "Tuesdays and Sundays" and "Two Rooms." In New York, she directed adaptations of "Tamburlaine the Great" and "Valkyrie" for Target Margin Theater, "Match or Spooky Action (at a distance)" and "L'Interieur" at Here. Gellert has worked at Court Theatre, The McCarter Theater, The Public Theater and Steppenwolf. She is a founding member of Chicago's I-80 Drama Company and a member of Lincoln Center Directors Lab.

The 11-person ensemble for "The Duchess of Malfi" features Corena Chase (Duchess of Malfi), Alex Organ (Ferdinand), Richard Gallagher (Bosola), Dan Colman (Antonio), Erin Buckley (Julia), Bryan Clark (Delio), David Matranga (The Cardinal), Erin Felgar (Cariola), Eric Gilde (Silvio), Brad Love (Castruchio) and Gabriel Mahler-Haug (The Prince of Malfi).

The production includes set design by Rumiko Ishii, costume design by Christina Bullard, lighting design by Melissa Mizell, sound design by Amy Altadonna and choreography by Chase Brock. Ryan Durham is the stage manager, and Alex Grennan is the dramaturg.

Performances are at 8 p.m. nightly, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Jan. 21. Opening night is Wednesday, Jan. 18. Single tickets are $18, and student and senior tickets are $12. Discounted group rates are also available. Tickets may be purchased by calling (203) 432-1234, online at www.yale.edu/drama, or in person at the Yale Repertory Theatre box office at 1120 Chapel St. (at York).
