Campus preparing for visit
by China's President Hu Jintao

Although the University has not received official confirmation, planning is underway for a visit to campus by President Hu Jintao of China.

The tentative date for the visit, during which Hu would deliver a speech at Sprague Hall, is Friday, April 21.

"A visit would be a testament to our faculty's extensive scholarly activities in China and to the long-standing relations between Yale and China," Vice President and University Secretary Linda K. Lorimer stated in a message sent to the Yale community.

A block of tickets to the speech will be made available to students and faculty. Planning underway also includes efforts to ensure that all members of the Yale community will have access to a live broadcast of Hu's speech, as it is expected that demand for tickets to the speech will exceed the supply. There are also plans for a panel sponsored by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies following the speech in which faculty will comment on the speech and offer reflections about China.

Hu was originally scheduled to visit Yale last September, but his trip to the United States, which was to include a stop in Washington, D.C., was postponed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Lorimer's message to the community about the tentative visit may be viewed at: https://light.its.yale.edu/messages/UnivMsgs/detail.asp?Msg=16289

The University has also established a website at www.yale.edu/hu_jintao_visit/ that will offer details of the visit as they become available.
