The University has received official notification that President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China will visit campus on Friday, April 21.
Hu is scheduled to give a speech at 11:30 a.m. in Sprague Hall, 470 College St. A block of tickets to the speech will be made available to students and faculty. Other members of the Yale community will be able to view Hu's speech live on local cable television or via the University website.
Hu, 63, became China's president in March 2003. He is a native of Jixi, Anhui Province. An engineer, he graduated from the Water Conservancy Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, majoring in the study of key fluvial power stations.
Following Hu's speech, Yale faculty members will present their reflections and insights on the address at a panel titled "China Today," to be held at 3 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.
Ian Shapiro, Sterling Professor of Political Science and the Henry R. Luce Director of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, will moderate the discussion. Panelists and their tentative talk titles are:
* Harold Koh, Law School dean and the Gerard C. & Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law, and former assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, "China and Human Rights."
* Deborah Davis, professor of sociology, a member of the national Committee on U.S.-China Relations and former chair of the Yale Council of East Asian Studies, "China: Urban, Rural and Family Agendas."
* Paul Gewirtz, the Potter Stewart Professor of Constitutional Law and director of the Law School's China Law Center, and former special representative for the Presidential Rule of Law Initiative for the U.S. State Department, "China and the Rule of Law."
* Frances Rosenbluth, professor of political science, a comparative political economist with a special interest in Japan, "China: Views from Her Neighbors."
* Ernesto Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and former president of Mexico, "China and Globalization."
The panel discussion is free and open to the public.
