Conference to examine issues facing
youths in the juvenile justice system

Physicians for Human Rights will present a conference titled "Beyond These Walls: Promoting Health and Human Rights of Youth in the Justice System" on Saturday, April 8, at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

The event, which will take place 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in Rm. 127, is co-sponsored by the Orville H. Schell Jr. Center for Interational Human Rights at the Law School, the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance and Campaign 4 Youth Justice.

Conference participants will discuss the history, complexities and challenges of the juvenile justice system. Specific topics will include adolescent brain development, disproportionate minority contact, over-incarceration of youth, the mental health needs of youth, community-based services, restorative justice and the treatment of youth as adults in the criminal courts. It is designed for all health professionals, child advocates and students in the fields of medicine, nursing, social work, public policy, law and criminal justice.

The keynote speakers will be Dr. David Fassler, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and State Representative Toni E. Walker, deputy majority leader in the Connecticut General Assembly. Representatives from the non-profit organization Youth Rights Media have also been invited to speak.

Also featured as panelists will be Jeff Butts, Chapin Hall Center for Children, University of Chicago; Dr. Steven Berkowitz, National Center for Children Exposed to Violence, Yale Child Study Center; Ann-Marie DeGraffenreidt, Juvenile Justice Project, Center for Children's Advocacy Inc.; and Don Devore, director of Juvenile Services, Connecticut Department of Children and Families.

The conference will also include workshops by over a dozen non-profit and government organizations involved in juvenile justice.

Registration -- which includes lunch, conference materials and a one-year membership to Physicians for Human Rights -- is $15. For more information and registration, visit www.phrusa.org/students/hjy_newhaven.
