Yale Library Open House Day

If you've ever wondered whether that time-worn classic on the top shelf of your bookcase is worth saving or how to keep a treasured-but-crumbling childhood tome from deteriorating further, the answers to your questions might be found at the Yale University Library Open House Day on Saturday, April 8, at Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St.

The event, part of the Sterling Library's 75th anniversary celebration, will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. It is being presented in conjunction with Communiversity Day (see related story). All are invited to attend free of charge.

Among the highlights of the open house will be the library's version of "Antiques Road Show." Librarians and archivists from Sterling's Manuscripts and Archives Department and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library will be on hand to advise visitors about the history of their old books and documents and discuss how best to preserve them. This event will take place 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. There is a limit of three books and 10 documents per person.

The day will also feature tours of Sterling Memorial Library. Specific themes will be: "Architecture & Stone Carvings of Sterling," at 11 a.m.; "A Tour with the University Librarian," at noon; "Highlights of Sterling," at 1 and 3 p.m.; and "Stained Glass Windows of Sterling," at 2 p.m. Registration is recommended due to space limitations; to reserve a place, send e-mail to anniversary75th@yale.edu or call (203) 432-8061.

Other highlights that day will include:

* A rare chance to view close-up some of the treasures of the Manuscripts and Archives Department.

* A presentation at 1 p.m. by the Kramer Initiative for Lesbian and Gay Studies at Yale, held in conjunction with the special exhibition "New Acquisitions in Lesbian and Gay Studies."

* The opportunity to see the Sterling Library's current exhibitions: "Magic in Mesopotamia," "UN 60" (a celebration of the United Nations' 60th anniversary) and "Witnesses to War and Revolutions: The Papers of Louise Bryant and William C. Bullitt Jr."

* A Welcome Table, featuring library brochures, self-guided tours, a children's treasure hunt and library gifts on sale.

* The chance to see a book made from soap, in which the story unfolds as it is washed, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

* A sale of books about Yale and New Haven by the Yale Bookstore.

* Refreshments throughout the day.

Details about the open house are available at www.library.yale.edu/75th.
