Yale leaders contribute $70,000 to match employee and student donations

In the first few days after its creation, a relief fund for victims of Hurricane Katrina that was established by the University had already received donations from hundreds of members of the Yale community.

The University's officers, deans and trustees have pledged $70,000 to match up to $100 of any charitable donation made by faculty, staff and students to an agency providing relief to victims of the disaster.

At press time, 324 members of the campus community had signed up for payroll or student billing deductions in the amount of $37,687. As some contributions have been over the $100 matching limit, the match amount to date is $28,247.

Individuals can make donations online at www.yale.edu/katrina or by completing a paper form that can be downloaded from the website.

In addition, a procedure will soon be posted to indicate how to deposit funds that are raised to support the Hurricane Relief effort by individual departments. For immediate assistance, contact Cynthia Smith at cynthia.a.smith@yale.edu.

Yale will also match contributions that have already been made directly to relief organizations by faculty, staff and students. Forms for those wishing to participate in this program are also available at www.yale.edu/katrina.

The organizations that will receive the matching funds are the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, United Jewish Communities Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund and United Methodist Committees on Relief.
