Lecture to examine importance of research to public policy

Elaine Zimmerman, executive director of the Connecticut Commission on Children, an office of the Connecticut legislature, will speak in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy lecture series on Friday, Sept. 23.

Zimmerman's talk, titled "How Important is Research to Public Policy Success?," will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Rm. 116, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. The event is free and open to the public. For further information, e-mail sandra.bishop@yale.edu or call (203) 432-9935.

Zimmerman co-designed Connecticut's School Readiness Campaign, which involves business, mayors, parents, the legislature and early childhood educators. She also served as chief consultant to the Early Reading Success legislation, which created full-day kindergarten, after-school programs, summer programs, resources for teacher training in early literacy and language acquisition, and reduced class size.

Zimmerman worked with the first state legislation in the nation that created a Prevention Council, budget, benchmarks and a framework for the state of Connecticut.

Zimmerman guided the legislature through the passage of the Safe Learning Act, which provides schools with money for the creation of safety policies. She led a focus group on model state policy on children and terrorism, with attention to the mental health and safety needs of the next generation.

The author of articles on family and work, child development, parent leadership and community strengthening, Zimmerman is also a published poet, essayist and political analyst. She was one of 10 women honored with the Good Housekeeping Award for Women in Government in 2001.

Bioethicist to serve as Beeson Visiting Professor

Dr. Solomon Benatar, director of the Bioethics Center and a professor of medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, will visit the campus Monday-Thursday, Sept. 26-29, as the inaugural Paul B. Beeson Visiting Professor.

Benatar will discuss "Professionalism in a Globalizing World" on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. in the Beaumont Room of the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The talk, sponsored by the Program for Humanities in Medicine, is free and open to the public. Benatar will also speak on "Global Disparities in Health: What Do Bioethics and Human Rights Offer?" at the Department of Medicine's Grand Rounds on Thursday, Sept. 29.

A well-known physician, teacher and investigator in respiratory medicine, Benatar previously served as chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He has been acknowledged as being one of the foremost international bioethicists, writing extensively on health, social justice and the meaning of professionalism in a globalized world.

Benatar, who served as president of the International Association of Bioethics from 2001 to 2003, is a foreign associate member of the U.S. National Academy of Arts and Sciences and an honorary member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Health and Human Rights.

The Paul B. Beeson Visiting Professor is sponsored by alumni of the Department of Internal Medicine to honor Dr. Beeson, chair of the department from 1952 to 1965, whose legacy continues to enrich the department and inspire young trainees and students.
