The cast for "Attempts on Her Life," dramatizing a woman's journey of self-discovery, include (from left) Richard Gallagher, Kathleen McElfresh and Michael Braun.

Audience will be 'postmodern
detectives' in School of Drama play

"Attempts on Her Life," a groundbreaking play by British playwright Martin Crimp, will open the School of Drama's 2005-2006 season.

The work, the thesis production of director Anna Jones, will be presented Tuesday-Saturday, Oct. 11-15, in the New Theater, 1156 Chapel St.

In "Attempts on Her Life," Crimp guides his heroine through a complex search for meaning, piecing together the fractured identity of the modern woman as imagined by those who surround her. The work is designed to allow the director and artistic team expansive freedom of expression by eliminating all predetermined roles and to engage the audience as "postmodern detectives" in the heroine's journey of self-discovery. The Times (London) described "Attempts on Her Life" as "thrillingly inventive ... confoundingly complex and utterly absorbing."

The ensemble cast includes: Michael Braun, Erin Buckley, Corena Chase, Dan Colman, Sarita Covington, Richard Gallagher, David Matranga, Kathleen McElfresh, Alex Organ, Gilbert Owuor and Ryan Quinn.

Director Jones is a third-year M.F.A. candidate in directing at the School of Drama where her credits include "Blue Orange," "Cabaret," "As You Like It," "Breakers," "Saturnalia in Poughkeepsie" and "Alice Eat Your Words." Before coming to Yale, Jones attended Cambridge University where she directed "The Rape of Lucretia," "The Love of the Nightingale" and "Candide" and co-devised Carol Ann Duffy's book of poetry "The World's Wife" for performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2001.

"Attempts on Her Life" features scenic design by Dustin Eshenroder, costume design by Rachel Myers, lighting design by Catherine Tate and sound design by Sharath Patal. Michael D'Alessandro is the dramaturg; Nikky Rossini is the stage manager.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. nightly, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Oct. 15.

School of Drama productions offer audiences an opportunity to see young professionals-in-training who are continuing the legacy of such artists as Liev Schreiber, Meryl Streep, Paul Giamatti, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Durang and Tony Shaloub -- to name just a few.

This year's season will also include "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare (directed by May Adrales), Dec. 8-10 and 13-14, and "The Duchess of Malfi" by John Webster (directed by Susanna Gellert), Jan. 17-21.

Subscription packages for the School of Drama's 2005-2006 season are $36-$45. Individual tickets are $15-$18; $12 for students. Discounted rates for seniors are also available. Tickets can be purchased by phone at (203) 432-1234 and in person at the Yale Repertory Theatre box office, 1120 Chapel St. (at York).

Carlotta Festival

Subscribers to the School of Drama season are also offered an advance opportunity to purchase tickets to the first annual Carlotta Festival, a celebration of new plays and their playwrights, to be held May 5-14 at the New Theater.

The festival is named in honor of Carlotta O'Neill, wife of playwright Eugene O'Neill and a patron of the School of Drama's Playwriting Department and Library. It was founded by Richard Nelson, newly appointed chair of the Playwriting Department, and is supported by the Carlotta M. and Eugene O'Neill Fund.

The Carlotta Festival will feature brand-new works that are still in the early stages of development. Play titles and a performance schedule will be announced at a later date. The plays will be presented in repertory for only four performances each, and seating is extremely limited.
