Psychiatrists honored for recent paper
Sidney J. Blatt, professor of psychiatry and psychology, and Golan Shahar, assistant professor of psychiatry, recently received an award for outstanding scientific contribution from the Committee on Scientific Activities of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
The award was for their paper, "Psychoanalysis: For What, With Whom and How: A Comparison with Psychotherapy." Blatt and Shahar compared therapeutic outcome in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and found that psychoanalysis contributes to a significantly greater increase in adaptive, benevolent interpersonal schemas.
The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary's 53rd annual meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the New Haven Lawn Club.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Robert Alpern, dean of the School of Medicine. His topic will be "Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital Partnering to Create a World-Class Medical Center."
The meeting will also include the election of auxiliary officers and the board of managers and the presentation of the Toy Closets awards to individuals or companies who have demonstrated special commitment to the auxiliary's Toy Closets program, which provides a new toy to every pediatric patient who is discharged from the Children's Hospital.

Mark Schenker, associate dean of Yale College, dean of academic affairs and lecturer in English, will discuss "The Kite Runner" at a "Books Sandwiched In" discussion on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Sponsored by the New Haven Free Public Library, the talk will take place noon-1 p.m. in the community program room at the library, located at 133 Elm St.
Bettyann H. Kevles, lecturer in history, received the Aerospace Educator Award from Women in Aerospace (WIA) last month.
WIA is an organization "dedicated to expanding women's opportunities for leadership and increasing their visibility in the aerospace community."
Kevles was cited for "inspiring the next generation through her teachings, lectures and writings and for creatively introducing space to those in other disciplines including history, art and public relations."
The awards were officially presented by high-ranking members of the administration and members of Congress on Sept. 27 at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington Cemetery.
