Message from the Leaders of
the Yale United Way Campaign:
Help make this year's drive our best ever

As the full impact of the tragedy and ,challenges stemming from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita continue to unfold, many have been struck by what has been revealed about the underlying condition of life for many disadvantaged people in our society and especially in our city.

This perspective has made us see even more clearly how meaningful our gifts to the United Way of Greater New Haven can be.

The United Way works to improve the lives of individuals and families right here. Its mission includes ensuring that children are prepared to be successful when they begin school through Success by 6®; strengthening families through support and education; and helping seniors stay healthy and connected to their community. This work gives a sense of hope that these social issues can be overcome. But no one group can do it alone.

We have an amazing community right here at Yale that cares about the greater New Haven area and continues to show that caring through support each year of our annual United Way Campaign. We all need to tap into our sense of responsibility and caring for all members of our community. United Way offers you an opportunity to do just that.

How can you support Yale's United Way 2005-2006 Campaign? If you are a student you can attend one of the events being planned for students including the just completed special student Day of Caring projects. If you are an employee of the University, you will be mailed a pledge form and United Way information. You also may pledge on line at www.yale.edu/unitedway. Give for the first time or increase your gift from last year and the University will match it.

Yale is bringing together its faculty, staff and students in an enormous effort to reach this year's United Way Campaign goal of $1,000,000.

The University has offered a challenge grant of $100,000 to be matched dollar for dollar toward any new or increased gifts raised by this year's campaign. All University match dollars will be put toward United Way's Success by 6® initiative to help ensure that all children in the greater New Haven region have the tools they need to be success-ready when they begin school.

Each member of the Yale community who contributes will be recognized with a blue wristband. We hope these bracelets will be a reminder of the purpose of our giving. When we wear the wristband we are saying, "I care about the greater New Haven community and I give through the United Way to help make a difference."

United Way Campaign Activities

Days of Caring Book Drive: Over 30 boxes were placed around campus to accept new or gently used children's books which will be distributed by New Haven Reads.

Leadership Circle Campaign: This campaign, aimed at encouraging individual donations of $1,000 or more, is led by co-chairs Dr. Robert J. Alpern, dean of the School of Medicine; John E. Pepper, vice president of finance and administration; and Peter Salovey, dean of Yale College.

Champion Training: One-day training sessions were held for ambassadors who will deliver the United Way message to their Yale colleagues throughout the campaign.

Day of Caring Projects: Yale faculty, staff and students participated in community service projects all around the greater New Haven region that took place the week of Sept. 11 as part of United Way's Annual Day of Caring program.

Competition and Celebration: All donors are invited to come together in Yale Commons 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, to celebrate the completion of the campaign and to participate in drawings for prizes contributed from throughout Yale and the community. In addition, representatives of departments and offices from the medical and central campuses will receive awards and prizes in five different competitions: highest average donation, highest percentage of donors, greatest increases in amount and percentage of giving, and most creative campaign.

Please help make this year's campaign our best ever. Countless people and families will benefit from your generosity. For more information about this year's Yale United Way campaign and to pledge online, visit www.yale.edu/unitedway.
