Jane Edwards, former director of the Office of International Programs at Harvard University, has been appointed as the first associate dean for international affairs at Yale College, Dean Peter Salovey has announced.
In her new Yale post, Edwards will provide strategic planning for and coordination of the various offices administering international programs for undergraduates, and she will serve as a liaison to those offices involved in admitting and retaining international students in Yale College.
As part of a review of Yale College, the University announced its commitment to providing all undergraduate students with an opportunity to work or study abroad. As part of that initiative, Yale has greatly expanded the number of programs and partnerships providing internships and educational opportunities overseas -- including a semester-long program at Peking University in China, where Yale and Chinese students will live and study together. To ensure that all students can take advantage of these international opportunities, Yale has made financial resources available to those who are receiving financial aid.
Edwards holds a B.A. and an M.A. from Cambridge University, as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She held positions in international education at the University of Pennsylvania, State College of New York at Potsdam and Wesleyan University before moving to Harvard, and she also served on the faculty at the University of Hartford.
She is the author of "The World in the Curriculum: Curricular Strategies for the Twenty-First Century" (Change Magazine Press, 1981), serves on the editorial board of the Journal of International Studies, and has extensive experience in international fieldwork, program development and program evaluation.
Edwards has held various leadership positions in NAFSA: The Association of International Educators, and is presently chair of the Academic Consortium Board of the Council on International Educational Exchange.
