Anne Marie Phelan, who served since 2000 as director of marketing and communication for the University's Office of Development, died on Aug. 21 after a three-year struggle with pancreatic cancer.
She was 48 and lived in Easton, Connecticut.
Prior to joining the Yale staff, she was a marketing executive with NYNEX and later Verizon for 17 years. She was an active volunteer with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Easton Public Library.
In a letter to Yale colleagues, Inge Reichenbach, vice president for development, wrote of Phelan: "In the short year that I had the privilege of working with Anne Marie, I found her to be an outstanding colleague and truly inspiring human being. Her optimism, her love of people, her commitment to her family, her work and her colleagues was a bright light in all our lives. I know I speak for all of us when I say that we will miss her very deeply and that she will forever remain in our hearts and memories as a beloved and admired colleague and friend."
Phelan was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in the city's Black Rock section. She attended St. Ann's Parish Grammar School and Lauralton Hall. She earned her B.A. from Merrimack College and an M.B.A. from Pace University.
Phelan is survived by Robert J. Ehlers, her husband of 16 years; her parents, Nan and John Phelan of New Milford, Connecticut; her sisters Kate Phelan-Collins of Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Betsy Blagys of Bridgeport; her brother, John Phelan; and mother-in-law Carol Ehlers of Madison, Connecticut. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
