The Yale singing group The New Blue performs at last year's open house hosted by the Yale galleries. Singing groups -- including The New Blue -- will once again participate in the celebration of art beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 7.

Galleries celebrate with open house block party

The Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art are joining together to host an open house block party for the public, featuring great works of art, free tours, music and light refreshments 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, at the corner of Chapel and High streets.

The event offers the community an opportunity to learn more about art and the museums' collections and programs in an informal setting. It also aims to encourage new ways of thinking about great works of art. There will be tours by Yale student guides offering creative insights into the museums' holdings and performances by the University's celebrated a cappella singing groups, which are designed to bring a new dimension to the experience of looking at works of art. Student guides and museum staff will also be on hand for conversation about the artworks and to talk more about what's new at each museum.

Tours and performances begin at 5:30 p.m. with one of the college's all-male a cappella groups, The Baker's Dozen, singing their greatest hits on the front steps of the Yale Art Gallery. The Yale Russian Chorus will perform at the British Art Center at 6 p.m. in celebration of the current exhibition "Britannia and Muscovy: English Silver at the Court of the Tsars." Other groups -- The Yale Spizzwinks, Proof of the Pudding, Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, The New Blue and The Duke's Men -- will perform throughout the evening in various locations.

According to the organizers, the block party also celebrates the new academic year, which will be marked by the reopening of the Yale Art Gallery's main building, the first building designed by Louis Kahn. The British Art Center, across the street, was Kahn's last building.
