Classics traveling fellowships
The Department of Classics is accepting applications for Berkeley, Biddle and Woolsey traveling fellowships from graduate students in classics and undergraduate majors in classics or archaeology.
The purpose of the fellowships is to enable students of classical antiquity to view the monuments, topography and landscape of the ancient world. They are not designed for archaeology projects or research travel, although a program of study or research often makes an application more compelling.
Awards have not exceeded $1,800 per applicant in the past, but the amount depends on the annual income from the prize funds, the number of applicants and the merits of the proposals. The award is intended for use this summer, and winners will be required to submit receipts for major expenses.
Applications should consist of a statement of the proposed plan of travel and a budget, together with a brief signed statement of support from a faculty member. Applicants must apply by noon on Monday, April 4, to the Classics Department business office, 402 Phelps Hall.
The Edith B. Jackson Child Care Program will host a lecture by Dr. Gretchen Berland, assistant professor of internal medicine, to benefit its scholarship fund.
The lecture, "Through the Lens of a Camera: A Physician's View, a Patient's Dilemma," will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at the Henry R. Luce Auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Dessert and coffee will be available in the common room after the talk. A donation of $20 is suggested. Tickets will be held at the door. Parking will be available in University lots and on the street.
Berland, a physician-filmmaker, was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship in 2004.
The Edith B. Jackson Child Care Program was founded in New Haven in 1970. Its mission is to be a "leading provider of high quality child care and early education by joining families and early childhood professionals in a community of care."
