A bible with batik cloth pictures created by Malaysian artist Hanna Cheriyan Varghese will be on display Jan. 29-March 23 at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM), 409 Prospect St.
"A Batik Bible: The Vision of Hanna Cheriyan Varghese" will be open to the public on weekdays, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, Feb. 1, 4:30-6 p.m. in the Great Hall of ISM.
Varghese, of Selangor, Malaysia, is the 2006-2007 artist-in-residence at the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven. She has long been interested in painting and drawing, and currently dyes batik cloth pictures and paints mainly in acrylics. Of her work, the artist says, "Visual images reveal more of one's mind than words. This is my way of witnessing for Christ for the gift I have been blessed with."
Varghese's work has been exhibited in China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Korea and the Philippines. A past recipient of grants from the China Christian Art Association and the Asian Christian Art Association, Varghese also serves as coordinator of the Malaysian Christian Artists' Fellowship.
The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Overseas Ministries Study Center with support from the Yale Divinity School. The artist-in-residence program at the Overseas Ministries Study Center is made possible through grants from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, First Fruit and the Foundation for Theological Education in Southeast Asia.
