A classic myth is made modern
in Yale Rep's 'Eurydice'

The Yale Repertory Theatre will open its new season this month with a modern take on a classic myth and timeless love story. (See this story for the complete season schedule.)

Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice" -- a re-imagining of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice through the eyes of its heroine -- opens on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Yale Rep, 1120 Chapel St. It will run through Oct. 14.

In this contemporary version, Eurydice must journey through the underworld when she abruptly dies on her wedding day. There, she must reunite with her father and struggle to retain her memories of her lost love. Ruhl's version features twists of plot and dramatic visual effects.

Ruhl's works include "The Clean House," which had its world premiere at the Yale Rep and became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. The play won the Susan Smith Blackburn Award in 2004. Her other works are "Passion Play, a cycle," which won the Fourth Forum Freedom Award from The Kennedy Center, as well as "Melancholy Play"; "Late: a cowboy song"; and "Orlando." Her plays have been seen at The Goodman Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, South Coast Repertory, The Wilma Theater, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Madison Repertory Theatre and Piven Theatre Workshop, among other venues. The playwright was the recipient of a Helen Merrill Award and a Whiting Writers' Award in 2003, and an anthology of her work is forthcoming from Theatre Communications Group. She is a member of 13P and New Dramatists.

The director of "Eurydice" is Les Waters, who is the associate artistic director of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. His productions include "The Glass Menagerie" (with Rita Moreno), "Finn in the Underworld," "Fêtes de la Nuit," "The Mystery of Irma Vep," "Yellowman," "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Big Love." His New York credits include "Apparition" at the Connelly Theatre; "Fen," "Ice Cream with Hot Fudge," "Rum and Coke" and "Romeo and Juliet" at the New York Shakespeare Festival; "Life During Wartime" at the Manhattan Theatre Club; "Big Love" at the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; "Savannah Bay" for the Classic Stage Company ; and "Hot 'n' Throbbing" for the Signature Theatre Company. He has also directed regionally, including at the Long Wharf Theater. Waters was head of the M.F.A. directing program at the University of California, San Diego 1995-2003. He has won numerous awards, including the Edinburgh Fringe First, Tokyo Theatre Critics, Drama-Logue, Connecticut Critics Circle, Bay Area Critics Circle and an Obie for "Big Love."

The cast for "Eurydice" includes Maria Dizzia as Eurydice; Gian-Murray Gianino as Loud Stone; Carla Harting as Little Stone; Ramiz Monsef as Big Stone; Joseph Parks as Orpheus; Charles Shaw Robinson as Eurydice's Father; and Mark Zeisler as both Nasty Interesting Man and Lord of the Underworld.

The creative team includes John Carrafa (choreography); Scott Bradley (scenic design); Meg Neville (costume design); Russell H. Champa (lighting design); Bray Poor (sound design); Amy Baratko (dramaturg); and James Mountcastle (stage manager).

Performances are at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinee performances on Saturday, Sept. 30; Wednesday, Oct. 4; Saturday, Oct. 7; and Saturday, Oct. 14.

Special events include Grad Night on Sept. 23, featuring a pre-show discussion with members of the creative team and complementary beer, wine and appetizers for graduate students; opening night on Sept. 28, after which patrons can celebrate with the cast and crew at Zinc; "Talk-Backs" (post-show question-and-answer sessions with members of the cast) following the matinee performances on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, and the evening performance on Tuesday, Oct. 3; and a senior matinee on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
