International Silat Federation director will lead free clinics

The Yale School of Drama will host a visit by Leonardo Stoute (Bapak Waleed), director of the International Silat Federation, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17.

Stoute will lead a series of free clinics on "Self-Defense & Awareness" noon-4 p.m. at the New Theater, 1156 Chapel St. To reserve a space, contact staff@silatusa.com.

Stoute will share with participants defense, protection and awareness methods as developed on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Stoute teaches ISF silat training, which delivers a holistic system that integrates physical disciplines with mental awareness practices to develop a strong body, healthy mind and wise spirit.

Beyond self-defense and martial arts Stoute also practices natural healing, dance choreography and meditation in movement, as well as being a lecturer about the Sufi spiritual traditions and Sufi healing.

With 33 years of experience in martial arts, dance and healing as transmitted through generations from the elders of Silat Tuo, Stoute is one of a handful of instructors recognized by Silat's motherland, Indonesia.
