Celebrated poet to read from his works
Cole will read from his work at 6 p.m. in St. Anthony Hall, 483 College St. He will be introduced by poet and Yale faculty member Louise Glück. The event is sponsored by the Department of English and is free and open to the public.
Cole was born in Fukuoka, Japan, and was raised in Virginia. The recipient of many awards, he is the author, most recently, of "Middle Earth," which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and "The Visible Man." His sixth collection of poetry, "Blackbird and Wolf," is forthcoming next year.
The Yale School of Drama will host a visit by Leonardo Stoute (Bapak Waleed), director of the International Silat Federation, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17.
Stoute will lead a series of free clinics on "Self-Defense & Awareness" noon-4 p.m. at the New Theater, 1156 Chapel St. To reserve a space, contact staff@silatusa.com.
Stoute will share with participants defense, protection and awareness methods as developed on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Stoute teaches ISF silat training, which delivers a holistic system that integrates physical disciplines with mental awareness practices to develop a strong body, healthy mind and wise spirit.
Beyond self-defense and martial arts Stoute also practices natural healing, dance choreography and meditation in movement, as well as being a lecturer about the Sufi spiritual traditions and Sufi healing.
With 33 years of experience in martial arts, dance and healing as transmitted through generations from the elders of Silat Tuo, Stoute is one of a handful of instructors recognized by Silat's motherland, Indonesia.
