Lunchtime talks will explore
issues in medical education

A profile of the entering class at the School of Medicine and recent trends in admissions will be discussed on Thursday, Sept. 21, in the first of a year-long series of lunchtime talks sponsored by the Medical Student Council.

Thomas Lentz and Richard Silverman, the former and current director of admissions at the medical school respectively, will describe "The Past Year in Admissions" and profile the backgrounds of the 51 men and 49 women who make up the entering Class of 2010.

Lentz, a senior research scientist and professor emeritus of cell biology, retired from the top admissions post this year after 38 years on the medical school's admissions committee, the last 34 years as its chair. The Class of 2010 was Lentz's final group of admitted students. Next year's class will be selected under the leadership of Dr. Laura Ment, professor of pediatrics and neurology, who was appointed Lentz's successor as chair in June.

Future topics in the series run the gamut from the influence of race and gender on health care and careers in medicine to changes in the healing arts and new developments in medical education. President Richard C. Levin will speak in February and School of Medicine Dean Dr. Robert J. Alpern will present a talk in May, addressing the state of the medical school as it approaches its 200th anniversary in 2010.

All talks in the series are held at 1 p.m. in the Beaumont Room of Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. They are open to medical school students, faculty and staff and other members of the Yale community.

Future topics and speakers will be: Oct. 19, "Health Disparities and Race at Yale ... An Update," Dr. Forrester A. Lee, assistant dean of multicultural affairs and professor of medicine (cardiology); Nov. 16, "The Status of Women in Medicine -- At Yale and Beyond," Merle Waxman, associate dean and director of the Office for Women in Medicine; Jan. 18, "House Staff Training and the 80-Hour Work Week," Dr. Rosemarie L. Fisher, director of graduate medical education and professor of medicine and pediatrics; Feb. 15, topic TBA, President Richard C. Levin; March 30, "The Healing Arts: How Are They Changing?" Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery and professor of neurological surgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions; April 19, topic TBA, Dr. Richard Belitsky, deputy dean for education and associate professor of psychiatry; and May 17, "State of the School," Dr. Richard J. Alpern, dean of the School of Medicine and the Ensign Professor of Medicine.

For more information, contact Dr. Laura Ment, faculty adviser to the Medical School Council, at laura.ment@yale.edu, or series coordinator Claire Bessinger at claire.bessinger@yale.edu or (203) 785-5824.
