Next week Yale is unveiling a new homepage with an updated design and improved navigation and search engine.
Major improvements include adding multiple paths for finding links, and reducing the number of "clicks" required to get to other University websites. A priority was the addition of a new search engine (Google's Search Appliance) that yields improved results for searches of all University websites.
The revamped Yale homepage -- known informally as the "Blue Page" and located at www.yale.edu -- now includes an "A to Z" index, "Quick links," a featured Yale news story and a link to the University's online Calendar of Events.
Also new are "gateways" for specific audiences, such as prospective students, faculty, alumni, visitors and more. Sub-committees of faculty helped to design a gateway to address particular faculty and academic interests, and students helped to develop the student gateway. Additional pages and features will be added in the coming months.
Linda Lorimer, vice president and University secretary and the Yale officer directing this project, says: "Adding a better search vehicle and improving the navigation generally were priorities. The design team, which combined the talents of the University Printer's Office and ITS Web Services accomplished those goals and has given us an attractive website that will be easier to update and to expand."
The site meets accessibility standards (Federal "508" and W3C guidelines) and technical standards (CSS2, XHTML, "Web standards"). It is also built to allow for easy updating and expansion.
Members of the Yale community are encouraged to offer their feedback in "Comment Boxes" at the bottom of each screen. These suggestions will be reviewed, and needed changes incorporated. The Comment Boxes will be removed in mid-October.
The new Yale homepage was created by a committee of faculty, staff and students. Its members were: Donald Filer, associate secretary (co-chair); Patrick Lynch, director of web architecture, ITS Web Services (co-chair); Kimberly Pasko, production manager, ITS Web Services; Phillip Simon, director of web publishing, ITS Web Services; Klas Bergman, executive director of communications, Law School; Bruce Carmichael, associate provost for science and technology; Bob Davis, director of RIS; Yale College students David Edelman '07 and Brad Galiette '08; John Gambell, University Printer; Nathan Gault, Yale College webmaster; John Goldin, director of the Office of Institutional Research; Susan Grajek, director of communications and technical support, ITS; Mary Hu, director of planning and communication, School of Medicine; Helaine Klasky, director of the Office of Public Affairs; Diana Kleiner, the Dunham Professor of the History of Art and Classics; Yve Ludwig, graphic designer, University Printer's Office; Amanda Patrick, library development and communications associate; the late Anne Marie Phelan, director of marketing and communications, Development Office; Kate Reynolds, assistant director of communications, Human Resources Office; and Victor Velt, web producer, ITS Web Services.
