George J. Mailath, whose research and teaching specialties include game theory, has joined the Yale faculty as the Alfred Cowles Professor of Economics.
Mailath taught since 1985 at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), where he most recently was the Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the Social Sciences. His research interests include noncooperative game theory, evolutionary game theory, social norms, repeated games and the foundations of reputations. His graduate-level textbook "Repeated Games and Reputations: Long-Run Relationships," which he co-authored with Larry Samuelson, was published last month by Oxford University Press. He has also authored or co-authored numerous articles for major professional journals.
At Yale, Mailath is also affiliated with the Cowles Foundation.
A native of Australia, Mailath earned his undergraduate degree at Australian National University. He obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University. He joined the faculty at UPenn as an assistant professor, became an associate professor in 1992 and was appointed the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor in the Social Sciences in 1998. He was named the Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the Social Sciences in 2003.
In the Department of Economics at UPenn, Mailath has served as director of graduate studies and as the undergraduate chair of the department. He served as chair of the department during the 2005-2006 academic year. He also served on a number of university-wide committees.
The economist has held grants from the National Science Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania Research Foundation and the Fishman Davidson Center for the Study of the Service Sector. He has been a speaker at several international conferences, and has held visiting positions at the University of Bonn in Germany, Yale's Cowles Foundation, the London School of Economics, Southampton University and the Eitan Berglas School of Economics at Tel Aviv University.
Mailath is a member of the Council of the Game Theory Society and is a fellow of the Econometric Society. He is an editor of Foundations and Trends in Economic Theory and an associate editor of Econometrica. He serves on the editorial boards of Games and Economic Behavior and The Berkeley Electronic Press Journal of Theoretical Economics.
