Show features Chinese artist’s works of ‘Revolution and Rebirth’
Works by an artist who grew up in China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution
will be on view in the next exhibition at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).
“Revolution and Rebirth: The Christian Art of Huibing He” will be
on view Nov. 12-Feb. 22.
He and her parents and six siblings grew up in government-imposed servitude in
Guangzhou in southern China. She started painting at age 6. Despite being raised
in a state that is officially atheist, she chose to become a Christian at age
23.
Now both a minister and a painter, He says, “Art has been a very important
spiritual journey for me.” She adds that finding the beauty in both nature
and people through her art is “the way I escaped from reality” during
her difficult childhood.
He is the current artist-in-residence at the Overseas Ministries Study Center.
Her work has been exhibited in China, Austria and the United States, and published
in over a dozen books and magazines.
There will be a reception in honor of the artist and exhibition on Thursday,
Nov. 15, 4:30-6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“Revolution and Rebirth: The Christian Art of Huibing He” is presented
by ISM and the Overseas Ministries Study Center with support from the Yale Divinity
School.
The show is open to the public free of charge weekdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at ISM,
409 Prospect St. Free parking is available.
