Steven Carter to speak on his new book
Stephen Carter, the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, will discuss
his new novel “New England White” on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at noon
at the Westport Public Library. The library is located at 20 Jessup Rd. in
Wesport.
“New England White” is a whodunit set in a New England university
town, featuring a plot that weaves issues of politics and race in contemporary
America. Carter will sign copies of the book after his talk.
Rolena Adorno is honored in Peru
Rolena Adorno, the Reuben Post Hallenbreck Professor of Latin American Literature
and chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, was awarded an honorary
professorship on Oct. 26 by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del
Perú in Lima. Adorno is the author of award-winning books on colonial
Latin American literature and history. Her “Guaman Poma Writing and Resistance” is
a major work on the Incan historian of the 17th century who wrote a volumunous
history of the conquest of Peru by the Spaniards and argued for a restoration
of Inca rule.
Adorno was one of a team of editors of Guaman Poma’s work, which was published
in Mexico, and she is currently co-editing a digital version. Her book “Alvar
Núñez Cabeza de Vaca” won three book prizes from different
literary and historical associations.
Yale World Fellow Ducoté wins fellowship
Nicolás Ducoté, a World Fellow at Yale and the co-founder and executive
director of the Center for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and
Growth (CIPPEC) in Argentina, has been selected the winner of the 2008 Gus Hart
Fellowship at The Chicago Council of Global Affairs.
Each year, the fellowship recognizes one emerging leader from Latin America and
the Caribbean who is contributing to the advancement of society and can engage
Chicagoans on key topics evolving in the region.
The Gus Hart Fellow spends one week in Chicago interacting with a range of city-based
commercial, civic and media professionals in a program tailored to further the
fellow’s interests and connect him or her to counterparts in Chicago.
Ducoté helps bridge research and policy through CIPPEC, one of Argentina’s
leading public interest organizations.
Howser and Resor invited to hockey camp
Yale juniors Crysti Howser and Helen Resor have been selected as part of a group
of 56 of the nation’s top women ice hockey players that will gather in
Lake Placid, New York, for USA Hockey’s annual Women’s Holiday Camp,
to be held Dec. 26-Jan. 1.
In addition to providing training for the players, the camp will help coaches
evaluate players for upcoming international competitions, including the IIHF
Women’s World Championship in April.
Howser, a forward, and Resor, a defenseman, were both part of USA Hockey’s
Women’s National Festival in August, which featured 67 players.
Gordon honored with ‘Freddie’ Award
Dr. Martin E. Gordon, clinical professor of medicine and chair of the Cushing/
Whitney Medical Library Associates, received the Freddie Statue Award in recognition
of his dedication as a dean of the Academy of Finalist Judges.
The award was presented on Nov. 2 at the 33rd annual International Health and
Medical Media Awards in Philadelphia, which was televised nationally. The international
event recognizes outstanding excellence in documentaries, series, videos, DVDs,
website and interative programs that change people’s lives and encourage
better understanding and treatment of human diseases.
Gordon previously received two Freddie First Prizes for his film productions
of “Toxoplasma gondii — the Insinuators” and “Eyewitness
to Gastroscopy — Revisited.” He creates and directs medical exhibits
associated with the Keynote Annual Lectures of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Lbirary.
He has also initiated the library’s DVD and video collections of the most
compelling annual Freddie Awards selections as special gifts to the medical library
by their award-winning producers.
Brian McGurn named assistant lacrosse coach
Brian McGurn, who helped coach the Maryland women’s lacrosse team to
back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances and a 28-12 record over the past two
seasons, has been named an assistant coach at Yale.
With the Terrapins, McGurn coached defenders, midfielders and goalies. The team,
which was ranked as high as second in the national poll, had eight All-America
selections, 10 All-South Region selections and 10 All-ACC selections during McGurn’s
tenure.
McGurn has also coached at Gettysburg College, Lynchburg College, and Franklin
and Marshall College.
