Yale ceremony to commemorate Veteran’s Day
The University will observe Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12, at a ceremony to
be held at noon on Beinecke Plaza.
The national holiday honors all men and women, living and deceased, who have
served in the United States armed forces. It grew out of the former Armistice
Day, commemorating the soldiers who fought in World War I. In 1954, the word “Amistice” was replaced with “Veterans” to
include all those who had served on behalf of their country.
In his official proclamation establishing Veterans Day, President Dwight D. Eisenhower
wrote: “On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those
who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve
our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting
an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”
The Yale commemoration will include remarks of remembrance from Yale students
and staff, as well as the traditional laying of the wreath in front of the alumni
war memorial.
All are welcome to attend.
