As this poster for the "Epic Heroes Then and Now" suggests, the conference will explore the relationship between modern heroes and their classic counterparts.

Conference to explore how epic heroes of old continue to inspire today’s artists

The relationships between ancient Near Eastern and Classical epics and their re-workings by later Western authors and artists will be examined in a two-day conference on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29.

Titled “Epic Heroes Then and Now,” the event will take place at the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St.

“We seek to raise questions about how ancient narratives and characters remain inspiring — self-consciously or not — for writers and artists of the Western tradition through the modern period, and how the modern works in turn can help us understand the ancient ones,” say Corinne Pache, associate professor of classics, and Kathryn Slanski, a lecturer in Near Eastern languages and civilizations and in the Special Program in the Humanities, who are organizing the event.

Speakers at the conference include Anna Bonifazi, David Damrosh, David Ferry, Simon Goldhill, Emily Greenwood, Stefan Maul, Gregory Nagy, Oliver Taplin and Rosanna Warren.

For more information about the event, send e-mail to corinne.pache@yale.edu or kathryn.slanski@yale.edu.
