Summit to focus on ways
to make campus ‘greener’

Actions the University has already taken to become a “greener” campus and work that has yet to be done will be discussed during the first Yale Sustainability Summit taking place Monday-Friday, March 31-April 4.

The summit, designed to encourage dialogue about sustainability initiatives on campus, will feature a series of department-sponsored events, a Sustainability Fair and a panel discussion on “The Role of Universities in Advancing Sustainability.”

The departmental events being offered on March 31 and April 1 include the following:

• A series of information sessions and demonstrations of Yale’s new Zipcar car-sharing program, hosted by Holly Parker, director of sustainable transportation systems, and Erin Sturgis-Pascale, a senior administrative assistant in the Office of Parking and Transportation. Sessions will take place on March 31 at 10 a.m. on Audubon Street; on March 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Lenney Plaza on Audubon Street; 8 a.m. on April 1 on James Street; and 2 p.m. on April 1 on Cedar Street. For information, contact holly.parker@yale.edu or erin.pascale@yale.edu.

• A presentation about Yale’s new Sustainable Event Standards by the Yale Sustainable Food Project at 4:30 p.m. on April 1 in Bowers Auditorium of Sage Hall, 205 Prospect St. For information, contact anastatia.curley@yale.edu or laura.hess@yale.edu.

• A discussion and tour of LEED-certified medical laboratory renovations led by Virginia Chapman, director of construction and renovation for the School of Medicine, on April 1 at 1:30 p.m. Meet in the Sterling Hall of Medicine rotunda, 333 Cedar St. For information, contact virginia.chapman@yale.edu.

• A screening of the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” hosted by the Office of Procurement, 2-4 p.m. on April 1 in the Peabody Museum Auditorium, 170 Whitney Ave. For information, contact brenda.naegel@yale.edu.

• A discussion with architects involved in the design of the Amistad Building and an overview of sustainability at Yale in the Amistad Building auditorium, 10 Amistad St. For information, contact reyhan.larimer@yale.edu.

Representatives from a variety of enterprises that provide sustainable products — including green procurement vendors, local farmers, representatives of renewable energy businesses, and individuals concerned with new transportation alternatives — will talk about their offerings at the Yale Sustainability Fair, which takes place on Thursday, April 3, in the Presidents Room of Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. The fair is open to the entire Yale community.

Julie Newman, director of Yale’s Office of Sustainability, will moderate a panel discussion with sustainability directors from other schools about how universities can contribute to the creation of a more sustainable planet. This event will take place on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Rosenfeld Hall (corner of Grove and Temple streets; use Temple St. entrance).

During the Yale Sustainability Summit, awards will be presented to one individual and one campus group whose efforts have advanced Yale’s commitment to sustainability.

More details on the summit can be found at www.yale.edu/sustainability/summit or by contacting Sara Smiley Smith, an organizer of the event, at sara.smileysmith@yale.edu.
