Renowned pianist’s 60th birthday
to be feted with events

A glimpse into the world of the professional pianist will be provided during a three-day symposium featuring performances, presentations and discussions.

Titled “The 21st Century Pianist,” the symposium will take place Thursday-Saturday, April 3-5. The event honors Boris Berman, chair of Yale’s piano department and a member of the Yale faculty nearly 25 years, on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Alumni pianists of the School of Music who hail from around the world will be among the featured participants.

The following is a schedule of symposium events. All events will take place in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St., unless otherwise indicated. Execept where noted below, all events are free and open to the public.

The symposium will begin on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with a master class led by Berman. The event is free and open to the public.

At 8 p.m. on Thursday evening, a group of Berman’s former students will perform in a Horowitz Piano Series concert. The featured pianists are Melvin Chen, Anna Grinberg, Liam Viney, Ivo Kaltchev, Andrea Lam, Stéphane Lemelin and Hector Sanchez. The program features music by Brahms, Debussy, Lizst, Schubert, Schumann and John Adams. A reception will follow. Tickets are $10-$18; $5 for students. Friday’s events include a welcome by School of Music Dean Robert Blocker at 9:30 a.m., followed by a keynote address at 9:45 a.m. by Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic for the The New York Times and a 1972 graduate of the School of Music. Tommasini will be introduced by his former Yale piano teacher, professor emeritus Donald Currier.

All of the School of Music’s piano faculty will give presentations beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The faculty, in addition to Berman and Blocker, are Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, Elizabeth Parisot and Wei-Yi Yang.

Following a luncheon talk on “My Work in Serbia after Yale” by Berman’s former pupil Dorian Leljak, a group of professional pianists will offer their perspectives on various dimensions of their profession, including competitions, commercial recordings, the performance of early music and new music, and teaching and writing on musical issues. The speakers are Ian Hobson, Ilya Poletaev, Sara Laimon and Robert Weirich.

Pianists Warren Lee, Chiao-han Liao, Peter Miyamoto, Ayako Tsuruta, Anne Louise-Turgeon and Edward Turgeon will be featured in an alumni recital at 4 p.m. The program includes music by Bach/Busoni, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy and Ravel. A reception will follow.

The symposium concludes on Saturday at with an alumni concert at 8 p.m. featuring Tanya Bannister, Dmitri Novgorodsky and Indhuon Srikaranonda at Steinway Hall, 109 West 57th St. in New York City. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Call (203) 436-1556 for further information.
