Yale undergraduates are honored with
Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes

The winners of the 2008 Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes have been announced.

The prizes were established in 1957 by the late Adrian Van Sinderen ’10 B.A., to encourage undergraduates to collect books, to build up their own libraries, and to read for both pleasure and education.

The Senior Prize of $1,000 was awarded to John Mittermeier of Davenport College for his ornithology collection. Two Senior Honorable Mention Prizes of $500 each were awarded to Robert Nelb of Timothy Dwight College for his health studies collection and to Jeffrey Tierney of Berkeley College for his collection on Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

Basie Bales Gitlin of Davenport College won the Sophomore Prize of $700 for his collection titled “Canvassing Books: The Itinerant Book Trade and the Democratization of Book Ownership.” One Sophomore Honorable Mention Prize of $350 was awarded to Kate Hawkins of Sillliman College for her collection, “History, Literature and Life for American Youth.”

Judges for this year’s competition were Stephen Parks (chair), Sylvia Van Sinderen Abbate, Joseph V. Agostini, Elisabeth Fairman, Spencer Gray ’09, Rebecca Martz, William Reese and E.C. Schroeder.
