Yale students and New Haven residents will join together for a carnival-styled celebration of neighborliness during the annual Communiversity Day on Saturday, April 12.

The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Cross Campus, which is bounded by High, College, Wall and Elm streets.

A long-established tradition, Communiversity features a giant cookout with free food, entertainment by Yale performers, and games and demonstrations for children. A wide variety of local non-profit and volunteer groups also host activities and share information with community members about the services they provide.

Last year, over 1,000 people attended the event, which is being coordinated this year by the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.

“I can think of no event on the Yale campus more conducive to promoting meaningful interaction between members of Yale and New Haven,” says Heather Robinson, a Yale sophomore and co-president of Alpha Phi Omega. “By bringing together Yale students and New Haven citizens, we hope to demonstrate that we are not just neighbors, but members of one community.”

Yale sophomore Catie Haar, co-president of Alpha Phi Omega, notes that the festive atmosphere of Communiversity Day helps to break down any perceived barriers between students and New Haven residents, and says that this year’s organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout than last year.
