This photograph of the Uyghur People, who live in the western province of Xinjiang, China, will be shown in an exhibit by Yale College senior Sabrina Howell.

Photography exhibit highlights culture
of Uyghur people of China

Images of a rapidly disappearing culture in Central Asia are featured in the exhibition “Oil & Mutton: The Uyghur People through Photography,” on display April 29-May 2 in the common room of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.

The exhibit, which is open to the public free of charge 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, is sponsored by the Council on East Asian Studies, part of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

The Uyghurs live in China’s northwestern province of Xinjiang, where most of the nation’s remaining oil reserves are located. The Uyghur people, however, are Muslims who have long desired to establish an independent East Turkestan. As China continues to develop the province, however, their traditional culture is being lost.

Taken by Yale College senior Sabrina Howell in 2007, the photographs in the exhibit seek, she says, “to document and highlight the culture of a people frequently overlooked by Western China watchers.”
