Yale hosts delegation from China’s Food and Drug Administration
A delegation from the China State Food and Drug Administration (sFDA) participated in a Yale training program
on food and drug regulatory matters April 14-22.
Robert Makuch, professor of epidemiology and public health (biostatistics),
led the effort to create the training program after discussions last fall with
Shuhui Qu, deputy commissioner of the sFDA. The delegation members, who are
being trained as future leaders of the sFDA, included directors and associate
directors of province sFDA offices and senior members from the central Beijing
sFDA.
The training program took place in Yale’s Laboratory of Epidemiology
and Public Health, and featured a keynote address by Peter Barton Hutt, a senior
counsel from Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C., and past general counsel
of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Hutt, also a founding member
of the Institute of Medicine, is a specialist on food and drug law and the
author of “Food and Drug Law: Cases and Materials,” a standard
reference on the subject.
Other speakers during the program included current and past senior officials
of the FDA, academicians and industry leaders. A formal delegation dinner was
attended by Paul Cleary, Yale’s dean of public health, and Qu.
“It is anticipated that this training program will be repeated in future
years to provide guidance in the creation and implementation of future directions
and initiatives of the sFDA,” says Makuch.
