Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh to receive Sengbe Pieh Award for his public
service
Harold Hongju Koh, dean of the Law School and the Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe
Smith Professor of International Law, and will be honored with a Sengbe Pieh
Community Service Award on Sunday, April 27.
The annual Sengbe Pieh awards, presented by First and Summerfield United Methodist
Church in collaboratioan with Amistad America Inc., are given to citizens of
greater New Haven who “have made a difference by their contributions
to the general welfare of the greater community through their generous public
service acts.” Named for the native of Sierra Leone who led a revolt
aboard the slave ship Amistad, the awards “symbolize the ability of citizens
to reach out to others to better the lives of young and old.”
The awards ceremony will take place 3-4:30 p.m. at the First and Summerfield
United Methodist Church, 425 College St. A reception will follow. The event
is free and open to the public.
Makuch receives an Alumni Award from UConn
The University of Connecticut (UConn) presented Robert Makuch, professor of
epidemiology and public health, with an Alumni Award on April 17.
Makuch is a 1972 graduate of UConn’s Department of Mathematics and earned
his Ph.D. from Yale in 1977. His primary research interests involve methodologic
issues in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies. He is currently
developing a biostatistics postgraduate program in Japan.
