United Way honors the University and staff member Diane Turner as community ‘champions’
United Way of Greater New Haven honored both the University and Yale employee
Diane Turner with Community Champion for Advancing the Common Good Awards at
its annual recognition luncheon in early April.
Yale was honored for generating millions of dollars and “championing
citizen engagement and philanthropy” through its annual United Way fundraising
drive on campus. Turner, associate university librarian for human resources/organizational
development and community relations, was cited for her leadership of a succcessful
and expanded book drive held during the United Way’s Days of Caring.
The 2007 Yale-United Way campaign — led by Janet Lindner, associate vice
president for administration and managed by John Swing, director of special
projects — raised over $1 million in contributions. This marks the third
year in a row that Yale has surpassed the $1 million mark.
The 2007 campaign included such innovations as a benefit concert at Battell
Chapel that brought together all University a cappella groups to support United
Way, a “Trick or Treat for United Way” event and a “Spare
Change” drive. In addition, Yale students, faculty and staff contributed
hundreds of volunteer hours through the United Way’s Days of Caring program
and other Yale-specific activities.
Under Turner’s leadership, the Days of Caring Book Drive held annually
at Yale was expanded to include other area colleges and universities, thereby
doubling the number of books collected.
Turner, a member of United Way’s “Success By 6” advisory
council and an active community volunteer, had led the Yale book drive for
three years and collected thousands of children’s books for New Haven
Reads, the New Haven organization that champions literacy and a love of reading
for all children and families. Through a partnership with United Way, this
year Turner also served as a consultant/trainer to Albertus Magnus College,
Gateway Community College and Quinnipiac University.
As a result of her efforts, well over 4,000 books were collected and donated
to New Haven Reads and Read to Grow.
