Call for science mentors

The New Haven Science Fair is seeking volunteers to act as mentors for area schoolchildren.

The fair will take place in Commons, May 13-15. Begun in 1993, the event has expanded to include almost all of the schools in the New Haven public school system. The goal of the program is to work with children and teachers at all grade levels, helping them carry out investigative, hands-on projects in order to promote skills in critical thinking, the scientific process, technology and communication.

Mentors meet with students and/or teachers at the school for about one hour, once a week if possible. Mentoring can take place from November to May, or during a shorter time period if necessary.

For more information, send e-mail to lise.orville@gmail.com.

Day Care open house

The Calvin Hill Day Care Center and Kitty Lustman-Findling Kindergarten will hold an open house for parents and children on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Located at 150 Highland St., the center and kindergarten are nationally accredited, full-day programs for community and University families. Tuition is set on a sliding scale, according to income.

For more information, contact Carla Horwitz at (203) 764-9350 or carla.horwitz@yale.edu, or visit the website at www.calvinhilldaycare.org.

Applebaum Prize inaugurated

The inaugural Applebaum Prize will be awarded in spring 2008 to a Yale College senior for an outstanding essay based on research done in the collections of the University Library’s Government Documents & Information Center.

The prize of $500 was established by the daughters of Harvey M. Applebaum, class of 1959, in honor of his 70th birthday. Applebaum is a senior counsel specializing in international trade and antitrust law, and a lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Law.

The Government Documents & Information Center is a depository library for materials from the United States and Canadian federal governments, the United Nations, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the European Union.

Nominations will be accepted from faculty advisors. Students may also nominate themselves. For more information, contact Julie Linden at (203) 432-3310 or julie.linden@yale.edu.
