Performance artist John Kelly

Love songs will be dramatized in workshops

Yale Repertory Theatre presents, as part of its Special Events Series, four workshop performances of "Brother," March 22-25.

"Brother," a theatrical song cycle, combines the talents of performance artist John Kelly and composer David Del Tredici. Kelly's lyrics are set to Del Tredici's music in a series of songs focusing on the themes of love. Subtitled "Ten Songs My Mother Never Taught Me," the work deconstructs the traditional song recital by opening up the stage for a theatrical rendering of the music, incorporating choreography, props, minimal set pieces and video.

The New York Times calls Kelly "one of the most intensely personal of performance artists." A two-time Obie Award winner, Kelly's roles include author, director, choreographer and performer.

Kelly's tribute to Joni Mitchell for New York's Wigstock evolved into the acclaimed performance work "Paved Paradise." His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series, Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival and San Francisco's Cultural Maverick Series.

Del Tredici's music has been performed by major American and European orchestra ensembles. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his composition "In Memory of a Summer Day," inspired by Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland."

Del Tredici has served as composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic and has held appointments at Harvard University, Boston University and University of Buffalo. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Music at the City College of New York as well as a member of the composition faculty at The Juilliard School.

Bound for New York City's P.S. 122, "Brother" will be presented at 8 p.m., March 22-24, and 3 p.m., March 25, in the New Theater at Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall, 1156 Chapel St. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $12 for Yale Rep subscribers and $10 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Yale Rep box office, 1120 Chapel St., or by phone at (203) 432-1234. Box office hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.yalerep.org.
